But hey, it gave birth to endless spin-off products, such as the Dune and Dune II
    videogames.

I don'd think Lynch's film was that bad. It tried to cram so much plot within a single
movie in a day and age in which it was less acceptable to produce long movie sagas. IN
fact, I am surprised they didn't remake Dune as a 5 or 6 movie series :-P

dune was an impossible project and i'm surprised he got it to the theaters. also 2:17 is super super long for a movie back then. now it's the norm.

lynch will not talk about dune and he will not do a directors cut.
they really pissed him off good.

actors were signed to 3 movies. it really should have been 3 movies. it wouldnt have worked as 3, but with all the content they should have added, it NEEDED to be 3 movies.

Command and Conquer was made by the same people who made Dune 2. To all intents and purposes, Command and Conquer is the actual sucessor of Dune 2.

I think you hit the target as to why the first one was so bad.

You simply cannot do justice to Dune with a single movie. It just won't work.

I do remember watching parts of a Dune miniseries (SciFi channel, I think) many years ago that did much better. (But I moved and didn't have access to that channel to keep watching.)

Yes, I remember them being made by the same company (Westwood). For a while I thought Command & Conquer was supposed to be an actual successor to Dune 2, even though it had a different story.

How much did you actually play?

I think things got interesting when you got access to starports. You could order units in bulk as they became available. This means you could order 4 air units all of a sudden in a crucial moment, or rocket launchers, or some other strategic unit. It was very intense for such an old game.

I also liked the Harkonen ultimate weapon: The Nuclear Weapon of Ultimate Destruction that Obliterates the Good Guys Left and RIght! (also known as The Hand of Death).

I have heard the 2000 version had some balance changes but I never looked to deep into that.

I hope at least the controls were better. The original version main issue was having to select and command the units one by one. A lot like the original Warcraft.

Heck, in Original Warcraft, archers were so powerful because you didn't have to micromanage them into attacking things and that freed so much brainpower :-)

Warcraft 2 was groundbreaking because you could select units in groups of 9, and give
them orders in bunch. You could select your 9 archers and tell them to move to certain
part of the map at once, instead of giving the command 9 times.

Which, in a game in which you were not actually managing big numbers of units most of
the time, was quite sufficient. At least it felt sufficient when I was a kid.

"Horrible" is too strong a word, in my opinion. I personally reserve "Horrible" for those movies that were so bad that they kicked them out
of hell. Among those, I count Night Train to Venice, The Beast of Yucca Flats and Blueberry.

Lynch Dune was just an attempt that fell short, in comparison.

It fell short because there was no way to do the story in a 2 hour
    movie.

I remember reading about the movie being made and it should have been 6 hours long - and even then, it wouldn't get most of the story.

I agree with your "falling short" assessment. You can't tell a 12 hour story in 2 hours. It just won't work.

I quite like the Lynch version, it certainly left an impression on me when I first saw it. I would have been about 7 years old at the time. I'm into weird and wacky movies, the odd visuals, the over-the-top crazyness, I find that appealing not a turn off.

The new movie I have seen, and is quite good. Flawed though because of the dense nature of the source material, the difficultly in condensing such a sweeping, multifaceted saga into a moview. The ending I think would turn off many who haven't read the book, appearing to be abrupt and unsatisfying. Still, this new Dune movie created a sense of grand scale which the original didn't do, the size of Arrakis, the Heighliners. It needed more Piter though, such a great character.

I loved the Harkonen ending in which you walk into the Emperor's palace and shoot him in the face :-)

I never did play Dune 2 through to the end.

    Nightfox

How much did you actually play?

I think things got interesting when you got access to starports. You
could order units in bulk as they became available. This means you
could order 4 air units all of a sudden in a crucial moment, or rocket launchers, or some other strategic unit. It was very intense for such
    an old game.

I also liked the Harkonen ultimate weapon: The Nuclear Weapon of
Ultimate Destruction that Obliterates the Good Guys Left and RIght!
(also known as The Hand of Death).

The soundtrack to that game was awesome. Multiplayer functionality would have been fantastic. I remember discussing how sorely this game needed multiplayer like Warcraft back in the mid 90's. I also think dune 2 had more strategy to it than later real time strategy games. Just swarming the base with enemies wouldn't work, you had to use each units in a specific way to win. In later games, you could just flood the base and win by sheer numbers alone.

There are modern FOSS engines which use the original assets of the game, and I think some support multiplayer.

The problem with so many RTS titles is that they turn into matches about who can click faster when they become human vs human. Even Command and Conquer pretty much turned into pumping up light/middle tanks, and the one who rushed with them the quikests won :)

When I want to exercise my thinking, I prefer turn based strategy games. When I want to exercise my reflexes, I prefer shooters or platformers. RTS fall in a weird spot where they have a bit of thinking (you have to build your rush engine, so you end up learning some opening "moves") and then a lot of clicking and micromanaging.

What I like from RTS is the single player campaigns, because they feel like puzzles to be solved. Most early RTS gave you a lame base and pitted you against an enemy with heavy defenses, and the challenge was to find out a way to crack those defenses.

Dune 2 was really the last RTS I got into. I did play Warcraft a little, and Dune 2000 and Red Alert, but I think apart from Warcraft, I didn't finish the others. Rise of Nations I have too, and that is OK, but I only play skirmish time to time. I think this was for the reason you mentioned that the games quickly turned into who could scramble the fastest, rather than strategy. I was always on the lookout for a RTS type game, which was on a larger scale but was more on grand military strategy than swarming, but never found one.

Should probably look into a good turn based game.

The Warcraft ones were fine, even if the first one had an interface which left a lot to be desired.

It is funny that Dune 2 is the last one you got into, since it is the first RTS game that is recognizeable as such :-)

Out of boardgames and tabletop wargames I do not know many turn based strategy videogames. I think the only one I d be confident recommending is Battle for Wesnoth.

I did try Rise of Nations, it is fun, but I think RTS games are too 'pointy clicky' for me and lack larger scale strategies.

I might look at Battle of Wesnoth, seen it come up in my Linux repository over and over again.

I don't do mobile games, but I looked it up and the game may be salvageable :-) It cheats by not being Real Time, though.
