Out of curiosity: have you watched the Dungeons and Dragons one?

I was going to skip it because the franchise was wearing thin for me,
but I gotgood references and I did go watch it. It had a bit of a Guardians of the Galaxy vibe.

I wasn't thinking about that when I watched newest D&D, but I must say, I really liked the movie. I had minimal expectations and I was super positively surprised. And yeah, sense of humour in that film may remind Guardians a lot.

i have a feeling it will be a cult classic of sorts. it's kind of campy and goofy and bizarre in all the right ways. as long as they can resist making more of them i guess. it kinda needs to stand alone

I doubt they will resist if the movie did good.

Yep. And I'm OK with it, as long as it's of similar quality. They did not tell it in the movie obviously but this was a Forgotten Realms movie. I liked a lot of references to Icewind Dale (prison), Harpers, Neverwinter, Red Mages, The Underdark, etc.

Many things surprisingly accurate to the setting. This can be easily continued with different story, heroes and part of Fearun.

I'd love to see a proper Dragon Lance movie, Planescape movie would be abstract and Gaiman-influenced... lot of ideas of great follow-up that is totally less prone to be repetitive than Marvel.. Of course we'd be equally bored if they hit double digit number of movies, but I don't mind move D&D movies that are unique and loosely connected with fantasy world adventuring within broad boundaries of D&D ecosystem.

I doubt they are making many more. It tanked in office. Heroic fantasy movies don't sell that well, with some exceptions.

Try to publish fantasy novels and you will find that every publisher wants urban fantasy, or grimdark, but never high fantasy or anything heroic.

That said, one of the things I loved form the D&D movie is a hidden love letterto RPG nerds that will get lost in the big audience: they captured perfectly
the actual thrill of being an RPG player.

What I mean with this is that when the characters sat together to build a plan, brainstorming stupid shit, then agreed to try something, and that something
failed misserably because of an unknown factor... it was so, so so so much likewatching actual RPG players mess up around the gaming table.

Do you or any of you remember DragonLance animated movie? They'd tried to capture original trilogy, but made only first part and sank the project, unfortunately.

I am afraidn I have never been exposed to it. I have heard they existed but never seen anything about it.

I have an impressive Dragonlance book collection, though.

I enjoyed it myself as well, also had low expectations going in. Just watched a second time last night in fact. It was fun, not great, but fun... and sometimes that's all you need.
