I think you mean cable modem, right.

When using an Offline Mail Reader, like I (and many others) do, the

everyone else, and differently from the way it's been done for decades,
why don't you just quote the messages you are replying to? It's not difficult. If you need some pointers on how to do it, just ask.

That's because you're not doing it right. The ">" symbol should go on
the left side of the text you are quoting (what the previous poster
said), but *NOT* in front of the new text that you are writing. It's
really not difficult, and most any editor will do it automatically. If
you need some pointers on how to do it, just ask.

I'm using an old small form factor PC, running a specialized Linux
router distro called "IPFire". Very configurable and works great. I've
been using it for about 15 years.

Prior to that, I used to use various Linksys brand routers, often with a
third party software (OpenWRT / DD-WRT) installed. They seemed to work
    well also.

I have a Netgear WNR2000 that gets the job done. Note that it is a router
only and not a cable modem. For the modem, I have a Motorola SURFboard
5101U. You will want to check and make sure that the modem is compatable
with your provider. It should be but you will want to make sure.

Here, the last time I changed a modem out, I had to contact my provider to
let them know some info (MAC ID, I think) so they could reset it on their
    end.

I do not have any experience with a modem/router combo so I cannot offer
    any advice there.

to the 21st century and modern BBS'ing. Before you try to whip out the "retro" card, I'm reasonably sure I've been doing this longer than you,
and even in the early 90's quoting was the de-facto standard on any kind
of BBS. The people doing the non-quoting thing here lately are on modern
BBS software and are either ignorant or stubborn to not be doing it the
way that is generally accepted. Your mileage may vary, but I don't care.

I think that's the direction they're going with this. It's not hard to do, and it (quoting relevant bits) makes discussions that much easier to follow. Your 40 columns, and quoting, seems to work just fine for what it is.

When someone doesn't quote a message they're replying to, I usually don't try to go back to whatever message they're replying to to try to understand the conversation. I just hit the "next" key.

As far back as I can remember, whether it be BBSing, newsgroups, web forums, etc. Quoting has always been kind of an "etiquette" thing. If you don't choose to, that's fine, but you probably won't get as many responses as you would if you did. :)

I understand fully what an offline mailreader is.. It's not like it's rocket science to follow threads in an area that i'm sure has no more than ten messages at a time.. and as you say with bbsing being so advanced now, qwk mail can be instantanious, and theres so many ways to keep up with it.. it really sounds like you are just trying to nitpick small things that really dont matter..

How bout this.. If you cannot follow a thread that is'nt quoted.. Just don't follow it.. don't reply to it..

quit whining and nit-picking everything you see, it's been old since the 90's man.

Seems the future went off and left all the "get off my lawn" old farts in the bbs world, or either this is the only place some of you feel secure being your true self, if you acted like this in the real world i'm sure you live a fairly dull, lonely life because people just don't want to be around you.

Two messages before the one I'm replying to, was from you to "all". There, it seems as though when you quoted the text it wrapped the ">" characters into the rewrapped quoted text. Here is one of the paragraphs you quoted:

" >I suspect that for people who were already adults and working "

Two messages before the one I'm replying to, was from you to "all". There, it seems as though when you quoted the text it wrapped the ">" characters into the rewrapped quoted text. Here is one of the paragraphs you quoted:

Don't quote that again, as it will mess up even more, but there is definitely something wierd happening somewhere.

Let's figure out what the actual problem is, and get it fixed. Most of us aren't trying to harp on anyone, or put them down. Personally, if something is indeed broken, let's figure it out and get it fixed!

oh i cut and pasted that and added the ">"
i didn't think it would get mangled.

Let's figure out what the actual problem is, and get it fixed. Most of us aren't trying to harp on anyone, or put them down. Personally, if something is indeed broken, let's figure it out and get it fixed!

dunno, is it really that big of a deal? i think it happens when people quote quotes sometimes.

I do *NOT* usually quote an entire
message, and do exactly what you're

And you're doing it now because...?

So, in a previous message, you said
*WAS* hard on some computers, and

No, I said plenty of BBSes don't have a
    quoting function. Maybe your offline
mail reader is impeding your reading

Some folks arent happy unless theyre complaining about something..
regardless of what message reader someone is using, it's fairly easy to
follow a conversation, or if it's that complicated, just hit next :-)

Another one who doesn't understand what an "offline mail reader" is. <sigh>

I understand fully what an offline mailreader is.. It's not like

    No, you clearly don't.

it's rocket science to follow threads in an area that i'm sure
has no more than ten messages at a time.. and as you say with

You are not reading the same nets/echos I am if you think that.

bbsing being so advanced now, qwk mail can be instantanious, and
theres so many ways to keep up with it.. it really sounds like
you are just trying to nitpick small things that really dont
    matter..

They do matter. Maybe not to you, but to most.

How bout this.. If you cannot follow a thread that is'nt quoted..
Just don't follow it.. don't reply to it..

How about I reply to what I want, and you can do the same.

quit whining and nit-picking everything you see, it's been old
    since the 90's man.

No whining coming from here. All the whining is coming from those who
don't know anything, and how things are done.

Seems the future went off and left all the "get off my lawn" old
farts in the bbs world, or either this is the only place some of
you feel secure being your true self, if you acted like this in
the real world i'm sure you live a fairly dull, lonely life
because people just don't want to be around you.

Hahaha, so you're not only an "entitled" n00b, but clueless about most everything. I see. Okay.

At least you and the other couple of recent resident morons will be gone
soon enough, when the "BBS experience" is no longer new and shiny for

Which features are you looking for in a router?

There is a difference between a plug-and-play router with only the basics and a 200 bucks prosumer router with quasi-enterprise features :-)

None of the Atari 8-bit BBSes I ran (beginning in Jan 1984) had quoting. Some of them had to delete their own initialization lines in order to free up enough memory to run and do much of anything... it was what it was back then. But these "40-col toys" were the predecessors to what we are doing now and back then, they were pretty fucking fantastic.
