My model railroad experience was more late 70's, eary 80's. There was a
large walk-in closet in between my room and my sister's and my uncle built a table frame that fit so we could walk around it. The layout moved down to
the basement, and I moved it to a sheet of 4x8' plywood. I had a loop within
a loop with switches so I could run two trains on different controllers by isolating the inside loop from the outside loop throughslide on plastic
track couplers. I ran HO trains, since that was popualr and I could find accessories for it at Meijers and Kay Bee Hobbies. I also had an AFX racing set, the one with the police car and semi tractor and trailer. That also fit on the layout. I didn't find out until recently AFX built track with
railroad crossings to allow tracks to overlap.

Model Railroader was the magazine I read the most. I'm still amazed at how mu ch detail some put into their trains and layouts.

I've been chatting with modern railroading folks, and model railroading has also gone high tech. The trains are processor controlled, and the track acts as a network with each locomotive having an assigned address. You can
control several trains on the same track without having to cut off or isolate them on separate circuits. LED lighting and fiber optics have also improved
in keeping the scale of street lights and other small light sources.

Most N-gauge layouts I've seen are done up to resemble large open desert vista s. It's tiny enough to make long runs of cars look cool. I'm an HO fan.
The traditional O scale stuff tends to be out of scale and very toy-ish, and high rail O is meant to remedy that, howeveer the rail height is out of scale to handle the tighter turn radii that exists on O tracks. High rail is equivalent to a real rail being 1 foot tall.

I'm a railfan, and run a Trains Net on the Amateur Radio Mode of
D-Star every Friday at 8pm Eastern Time. We discuss anything and
everything related to trains and railroading...and have a railroad
trivia question. The net meets on the QuadNet Array (www.openquad.net).

Once licensed amateur radio operators check into the net for the first
time, they are eligible for a commemorative certificate in PDF format.

To become a ham radio operator, in the U.S. and its territories, one
just needs to study and pass the Technician Class License Exam. Morse
Code knowledge is no longer required to obtain an amateur radio license.

The exam is 35 questions, multiple choice, drawn from a pool of over
400 questions...covering rules, regulations, propagation, RF safety, and
    basic electronic theory.

My late uncle, was the only other ham radio operator in the family,
and he was the youngest engineer hired on by the Penn Central Railroad.
So, he gave me my love of ham radio and trains.

For more information, go to www.theweatherwonder.com/hamradio.htm

P.S. To see the logo of the Trains Net, and yours truly in his
Conductors outfit (at the Arkansas Railroad Museum in Pine Bluff), go to www.qrz.com and search for WX4QZ.

Some railroad modelers use paper mache over a chicken wire frame to create mountain formations and tunnels. I think the newer ways involve carving on foam blocks, but when done properly papier mache can look pretty good.

Some things are needed for the experience. You could build a doll house out
of simple hand tools, however with better tools, clamps and fixtures you can focus on other aspects of building and design over basic fabrication.

When I used to play paintball, the rental markers were pretty basic, and if
you wanted to play to your potential, you invested in nicer gear.

I am compelled to believe there is no such thing as a cheap hobby.

How about papier mache? Newspaper, goop, and watercolors.

Air brushes and thinners are pricey

who said anything about airbrushes and thinners? why would you use thinner on water color?

    newspaper
    some flour
    some water
    water color paints

mix the flour and water into a thin paste; tear the newspaper into strips; drag the strips through the paste and shape into whatever... let dry until hard... maybe sand smooth if desired... paint it by dipping parts into the water color paints or just dip your fingers and spritz/flick the paint onto the model...

so a little $ for flour and water colors... maybe some for sandpaper... that's almost as cheap as estes model rockets without the engines... i made them as models like some folks made the plastic cars...

Bird watching, intersecting with a photography hobby, could combine to make a hobby of wildlife photography. Photography can also be an expensive hobby..

Oh man. I Loved Photography back in my high school days. I took a photography course and we were given a professional 35 mm camera and 5 rolls of B&W film. We could us the dark room whenever we wanted. The teacher didn't interfere so we were able to develope the nude pics of our girlfriends. I was very surprised to learn that girls liked taking nude pictures. ;-) I wanted to continue with it but as you said it can be costly. Developing Color film was REALLY expensive in the 70's. Today you just toss your film in the mail and get them developed for 4 bucks. Do they even do that anymore now that smartphones have camera's??

I'm not sure there are many places that even develop film anymore, now that there are digital cameras. Unless you really like film photography, why bother when you can use a digital camera? Most places that do photo prints these days let you bring in photos on a memory card to print out for you. Some places (like Walgreens) have a web site where you can upload photos from home and they'll make prints for you to come pick up.

Although my smartphone has a camera on it, I still prefer to use a dedicated camera when I want good results. With my cell phone camera, I've noticed when I zoom in on my PC, I often notice weird-looking artifacts. My smartphone is over 3 years old, so I know there's better stuff out now. I just haven't had a need to replace my phone yet (and it still seems like I just got my current phone recently). However, it seems to me smartphone cameras still can't do some things very well, like zooming in far - Smartphones just don't have enough room inside them for a lens mechanism that can do a good optical zoom. Also, I'd want a digital camera where I can shoot in RAW format for editing later - I've heard some recent smartphones can do that.

Have you been able to check out the new iphones with 3 cameras? I'm curious what kind of quality pics they take.

I haven't seen those yet. But I know recent model iPhones seem to take pretty good photos. It seems smartphone cameras are getting pretty good, but I still think there are probably some things that a dedicated camera can do better, such as zooming, since a smartphone just doesn't have much room for a zoom lens mechnism.

So you just drop off your
memory card at walgreens/walmart? That's incredible. They do give it back right? Or are there desposable memory cards now? ;-)

You don't even have drop off a card and come back. Many places I've seen have computers where you can plug in a memory card and select which photos you want to have printed, and they can print them right then. And with Walgreens, you don't even have to bring in a card if you don't want to - You can go to Walgreens' web site from home and upload the photos you want printed.

I remember seeing some digital cameras in the late 90s/early 2000s that would save photos to a floppy disk. That seems silly now, since my digital cameras these days can easily save jpegs that are around 14 megabytes each, and the RAW format files are much bigger. And I remember when I got my first computer which had a 10 megabyte hard drive..
