Would anyone one recommend a dynamic DNS service that has a simple and straight-foward client, script, or service that will update the DNS entry at regular intervals?

you can always just use the .synchro.net service.
how often does your ip change? you can just get a domain name and
use an updater script. i think namecheap and cloudflare have that
ability.

In the past, I've used DynDNS but they are owned by Oracle now
and they are full pay. I looked in No-IP and it looks like I have
to get their updater service for CentOS 7, but I am not sure if
it would be easy to set up or not. I did consider going with freedns.afraid.org, and it looks like they have a URI that is
available to update the DNS entry automatically. The issue that I
have with freedns.afraid.org is that I'm not comfortable with
some of their choice of domain names.

I use freemyip.com to keep my home IP updated. I run my BBS on a
seperate server which has a static IP so I don't have to worry about
it. What I like about freemyip.com is you don't have to run an updater app, you can just use task scheduler or cron to fetch a page and it updates, or what I have done is just set my homepage in firefox to
update it and then go to my normal homepage.
