    So...anyone still using Gopher?

It still exists, despite the web. I use it at times...there are distilled-to-text feeds from news sites (eat THAT, RSS). And it still provides
decent access to old file archives...was looking for some old Amiga stuff and found it quite easily.

I wish more people would use it. Long live text!

    So...anyone still using Gopher?

I have used gopher quite a bit over the years. I don't have a gopher client installed at the moment and the plug in I used with firefox became outdated, I'll have to look into that and see if that has changed.

Gopher is a good read only protocol. As long as your not posting or uploading it'll do just fine.

Sometimes I go looking for old files that I have missed or deleted I have a hard time finding on the web today. FTP searches were always good and they seem
to be hard to find now too. I'll have to check some gopher sites and see what I can find.

How exactly do you get there from unix? The commands are sometimes comfusing.
For instance I have used the commands >help and >unix ... they disply menus of things avaiable when typed in correctly. They just need the user to fill in the [blanks] with [info] . Like the name of a file on the directory, or something someone may want from a long list of data.
Chat for free on IRC sundays! Maybe learn how to chat the teleprompters on MSN and others networks; if you know how to understand how to send commands to a computer, there are people there to talk back.
Maybe you can make a face on TV :)

Well, I mean you probally would get to see your chat from home /if/ you watch the news. They have a lot of screens in the background, one of them is a chat (inside info only)

It's nice for a change. I think it's a little archaic but good for nastalgia. Most people don't know SDF began as a BBS. Just like this one.

I used Overbite myself for a while, nowadays I just use the Floodgap gopher-to-http proxy out of laziness.

I'll probably give it another shake, as it's really the only place (other than the SDF Mastodon instance) to discuss issues relating to SDF.

gopher does suck in comparison to what we have now, though.

    So...anyone still using Gopher?

I went through a phase of using gopher and loved it. Then my free hosting
on devio.us went down for over a year. I could not afford to run my own
server so i moved my content to bitbucket pages. I designed my content to target basic links/lynx browsers. Managing my content in git feels like a natural fit. It doesn't seem like it would be all that difficult to make
a free gopher hosting service backed by an alternative VCS such as fossil.
That would be fun to make or use.

    Peace,
    Ben

It can be fun to look though some of the sites. I haven't used it in a while though.

One thing I thought was cool was gopherpedia.com. You can acess wikipedia from it, but using the gopher protocol. There is also a telnet version of this, but I found this far more pleasent to use.

    Sorry for the late response....

Yes I do enjoy the Gopherpedia interface, as well as the gateway to textfiles.com (what a better way to read those old files than gopher).

Lately someone has been putting up some feeds from major websites. I've been getting slashdot stuff, theregister.co.uk and various other things. Kind of like RSS before RSS was cool, you know?

I've been tempted to float a gopher server but I worry about the security implications...well that's true for just about anything these days I guess.

It's kind of fun to revisit the old internet protocols that were largely abandoned after the web. I still can't grok IRC though...every channel I visit is full of people with zero chatter. Well, it's just like I remember back in the 90's I guess.

I remember when I was in Elementary School, our school had a library with books pertaining to the internet and computers published around 1996 (when I was born). Gopher was mentioned, but if anything I wasn't too keen on it. I did learn about virtual worlds like ActiveWorlds (then called Alphaworld) which surprisingly is still running, albeit it's as populated as the BBS scene is these days. ;/

I wish more people would use it. Long live text!

Never used Gopher, but seconded. I use YAM on my Amiga - I find this forced migration to HTML emails very annoying. Just more opportunities for people to distract me and try and sell me rubbish I don't need. The internet is just a little more sane, when it's through the medium of text.
