Have you ever played a bass or electric guitar and used a DI box for it?
I've played electric guitar casually at home for a long time. I hadn't heard of a DI box until you mentioned it recently. But I've never recorded in a studio or anything like that.. Mainly just plugged into an amp at home, or sometimes into my PC to do recording on my PC.
