I went to Guitar Center tonight to look at recent models of Roland V-Drums and examine double-bass pedals (direct drive and chain) - and though they were "open" (until 9pm), they had squat for inventory. They had a ton of cheap (e.g. Alesis) edrum kits in boxes and a (very) few acoustic kits setup, and none of the higher end Roland V-Drums. And their bass pedal test setup was totally devoid of working pedals. And not a single direct-drive pedal anywhere.

I recalled that the last time I went there (pre COVID), there was nobody working in the drum department then either and no inventory.

I'd heard these guys might go out of business and all I can say is: they deserve to. The whole point of going to (and buying from) GC is so you can see/feel/hear the product, but if they don't have any... screw 'em and buy from Amazon and send it back if you don't like it (I guess).

I've been a GC customer for 40 years but there's no reason to go there any more. Bummer.

I read GC filed for Bankruptcy DM. I too have been visiting GC for 40 years. My last few Guitar purchases have been via E-bay but only Guitars I've played at GC. I don't like buying blind but as you said GC just don't have the "stock". I don't know if GC is trying to save face to stay in business? It is a bummer I agree.

I've bought a few things over the years from them, but not having one
very close by means not as much as I could have, and you're right -
seeing, feeling, touching, hearing - that's what matters! I'm one
of these people that will go in the store and try it out and get
help and NOT go buy online after that, but if there's no help and
    notthing to try... Well...

They've filed multiple times now and refinanced/structured their massive debt to stay afloat. But to have any hope of recovering fully, I think they really need to appear like they *care* in their stores, and it just doesn't (or least, not the one nearest to me).

I'll take my family into GC on occasion - both kids play guitar (bass mainly but my daughter's got a really cool tenor uke) and piano so seeing what's around is a fun thing. We generally don't *buy* from there because I'm
also friends with the local music store owner and while he doesn't have the stock he can generally order it.

GC has lost a lot of the appeal that it used to have though - reminds me
a bit too much of Radio Shack.

I've heard GC has been in financial trouble. The last time I tried going to my local GC (months ago), they had COVID restrictions in place and only allowed a limited number of people inside, and they said there was probably a 2 hour wait to get inside, so I went home.

One thing I do like about GC has always been that they carry a variety of stuff. I've always liked going in to look at the guitars and synthesizers they have. There seem to be plenty of stores in my area selling guitars, but not many I can think of that sell synthesizers (maybe I haven't looked enough). I also like that Guitar Center posts used inventory on their web site, and you can buy used inventory and have it shipped to your local GC location.

I suppose buying online is an okay alternative though, as you can return what you don't like.

Agreed on the variety! And speaking of used stuff, that's why I would like
to visit GC when out of town too - cause you never know what used stuff
    you're gonna stumble over. :-)
