    Hi August.

02 Jan 20 22:41:00, you wrote to allfix:

    A quote from the allfix.doc:

3.2 Mail transfer and the FileFind system

The FileFind system offers people the ability to search for files
via echomail by writing messages addressed to the name "ALLFIX",
without quotes. The files, file specifications, and keywords
(preceded by a '/') are placed on the subject line. The message
    body may be left empty.

ALLFIX will scan the configured message areas and process all
FileFind requests. It will scan the BBS file areas and if any
matches are found, it will write a reply in the appropriate area.

Since the FileFind requests are sent via echomail, one request may
receive multiple replies. One problem with this system is that the
flow of mail may easily get out of hand. ALLFIX has a number of
features to reduce the amount of mail. First, no more than 15
files will be included in a reply. Second, it has the ability to
ignore any local FileFind requests. Third, ALLFIX will not
process FileFind requests that contain less than 4 non-wildcard
characters (ie. characters other than the '?' and '*' wildcards).
Lastly, ALLFIX has the ability to ignore FileFind requests that
are older than the configured number of days.

To facilitate searching for files, ALLFIX supports two elementary
boolean operators; AND and OR. These operators may be used between
    filespecs and keywords.

Please note the "ALLFIX will not process FileFind requests that contain less than 4 non-wildcard characters" part.

Thanks! I was not aware of the 4-char minimum.

Maybe the odd notice here of usage would be useful.

Do you or anyone know where this 15 file limit comes from?

What it doesn't say is whether the description is in a short or full form for the 15 files. Does it even matter, other than the latter mreply will be much longer.

Any info on this is greatly appreciated as new version for Wildcat Winserver
is being developed so getting it right the first time is the idea.

    Thanks.

no more than 15 files will be included in a reply.

Do you or anyone know where this 15 file limit comes from?

i would assume that it is in the settings of the replying system but if you took that from the block of text that was posted about this area, i would also say that it is a randomly chosen limit set by the originator/maintainer of this area to avoid flooding the area with huge lists of files that match someone's search criteria...

like the other day when someone sent a search for ".ZIP"... would you like all systems connected to be dumping their entire (eg) 10000+ files list of zip files in here? would those lists be posted as multiple messages or as one huge message from each system?

personally speaking, i think the limit is OK and that the resulting replies may lead one to refining their search crieria... the problem/question is how to enforce the limit when replying software doesn't have a setting to adjust the output to stay within the posted limit...

It is possible to define the max replies per area in allfix setup. Maybe the documentation was not updated.

The last Allfix from Harald Harms will be 20 years old soon. ;)

Exactly, in the Wildcat version I am helping with, the max number of files is set in a config file and could be anything so I was considering what a good limit to be hard coded would be. The Wildcat version doesn't do multiple messages and I don't see it as being helpful or necessary as I tested over a 100 finds on a test without issue.

like the other day when someone sent a search for ".ZIP"... would you

In allfix it would fail but with the Wildcat version it would find up to the number set in the config file as it uses the Wildcat search engine which is completely different to allfix and therefore create a find.

personally speaking, i think the limit is OK and that the resulting replies may lead one to refining their search crieria... the problem/question is how to enforce the limit when replying software doesn't have a setting to adjust the output to stay within the posted limit...

Not a bad idea to set a limit of XX and if there a more a message reply would give the number of finds and suggest refining the search criteria.

See my reply to Mark Lewis, this is a specific version only for Wildcat
systems and the limit of finds is in the config file, the question is what is
    a good max limit now.

Huh?, My Allfix at UniCorn BBS did answer his 3 letter searchstring ;-).

So I also did not know about that limit.
Maybe it is only there in other versions than mine Dos one.

I saw other systems also replying at 3 character questions.

    Look in this FileFind.Ont EchoMailArea.
So may be this feature is version dependend?

Yes, that is exactly what your very old and outdated Allfix v4.16 did
