• BBS on Cell Hotspot

From LEE GREEN@1:102/401 to ALL on Sat Feb 15 12:21:04 2025
My internet service is down for several days waiting on AT&T tech to come fix.

I wanted to run my BBS using a mobile hotspot off of my cellphone but apparently ISP's block all incoming connections only outgoing is allowed.

Has anyone found a way around this using an app or ?

    TIA

My internet service is down for several days waiting on AT&T tech to come fix.

I am guessing you already tried all the normal solutions; tighten connections, reboot cable modem, reboot computer. My internet/cable was down for about 1 day when the computer tech that came out to work on a neighbors cable disconnected mine for no reason at all.

I have similar experiences when it rains excessively ... wait a while and the issue goed away.

When I read about some of the techical challenges, it really is a special country overthere, for more than one reason. Friend of mine in MT had issues in a residential area of a 100.000 town, it took 5 days to get a fix.

That's usually the case here too but not this time it got worse when it
    stopped raining.

I am waiting 10 days for them to show up, AT&T doesn't care about their DSL
and landline users they want them to upgrade to the latest and greatest.

"Never attribute to malice what you can attribute to organizational
    ineffectiveness and monopoly mindset"

    (Massively paraphrased from someone else...)

AT&T isn't great with their latest and greatest, either. My next-door
neighbor has AT&T Fiber, and because of our street layout, he has a
long run from the utility pole to his house. There's quite a bit of
slack in the line, which means once a year a passing moving truck takes
    his fiber down.

He calls AT&T, and within their 4 hour reponse window, a guy with an
AT&T fleet subcompact car comes out, says "Yep, your fiber's cut, we
need to roll a truck". They've stopped the response clock with the guy
in the car. 4-5 days later, a truck rolls and fixes the fiber.

Their "permanent" fix was to throw the fiber over the comcast cable
line on the pole to give it a little more height. That'll work until
the fiber degrades from rubbing against the Comcast wire.

I've wanted to get AT&T fiber, as I need the upload speeds and lack of
bandwidth cap, but I'm concerned about the run to my house. I think I
might be OK if they can be convinced to do less than the absolute
minimum to get the fiber to my house.

    I'm not confident of that.

I have an application at work that uses Wi-fi hot spots to provide
connectivity from AWS to a WAN via SSH. For $5/month, we pay for static
IPs on the hotspots and inbound ports are open. The WAN nodes "phone
home" and are identified by their IP, and we can SSH into a device on
    the far end.

If anyone wants to run a BBS out of a van, that's the way to go.

I've read some of the complaints.
I had slack in a line that I thought was the cable company line so I
called them out but it was AT&T phoneline so they came out and tightened
it up now it's hanging again, I think I'll let a truck snag it this time
    screw AT&T.

He calls AT&T, and within their 4 hour reponse window, a guy with an
AT&T fleet subcompact car comes out, says "Yep, your fiber's cut, we

But by then those techs will be long gone so they don't care how they
    fixed it.

I've wanted to get AT&T fiber, as I need the upload speeds and lack of

    I wouldn't be either.

Are all ports open in AT&T fiber? residential or business?
I'm thinking of trying Earthlink fiber but they can only get me 12mbps
or 24mbps where I'm at, right now I'm at 3Mbps DSL with AT&T.

I'm guessing they won't open SMTP ports on a residential account, but
other ports would be open. The reality is nowadays that using home SMTP
services is more trouble than it's worth, as the large providers most
people use often seem to ban mail coming from home IP ranges by
    default.
